Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” Debuts in Public Beta: Features Linux 6.11 and GNOME 47

Today, Canonical announced the beta release of the forthcoming Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) operating system, available for public testing before its official launch on October 10th, 2024.

With the stable release just three weeks away, the beta version provides an early look at what users can expect. Ubuntu 24.10 comes equipped with the recently launched GNOME 47 desktop environment and runs on the new Linux 6.11 kernel series.

Key features of Ubuntu 24.10 include a revamped desktop installer that supports local file paths for auto-install imports, enhanced Power Profiles Manager optimized for the latest hardware, particularly AMD processors, and improved support for fingerprint recognition devices.

The release also introduces a new Security Center which allows easy toggling of the experimental permissions prompting feature for managing Home directory permissions, an upgraded App Center with numerous enhancements to its management functionalities, and additional updates for Mutter and GNOME Shell that improve stability and performance.

Another fascinating update in the forthcoming Ubuntu 24.10 version concerns users of NVIDIA graphics. The new release, called Oracular Oriole, will switch from Xorg to Wayland as the default on systems equipped with NVIDIA GPUs. This change accompanies various other updates predominantly influenced by the latest versions of packages.

Deep within, Ubuntu 24.10 enhances its capabilities with an upgraded toolchain featuring GCC 14.2, GNU Binutils 2.43.1, GNU C Library 2.40, LLVM 19, Rust 1.80, Go 1.23, OpenSSL 3.3, systemd 256.5, Netplan 1.1, and .NET 8.

For those keen on exploring Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) further, you can download the beta release from the official website. However, it’s important to note that this is a beta version and is advised against being utilized in production settings.
