Canonical has announced a collaboration with SiFive and ESWIN Computing to support Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on the HiFive Premier P550 RISC-V development board.
The HiFive Premier P550 is a powerful single-board computer equipped with the ESWIN EIC7700X SoC, featuring a SiFive Quad-Core P550 64-bit RISC-V processor that operates at 1.4 GHz. It also includes an integrated Imagination AXM-8-256 GPU capable of hardware-accelerated video encoding and decoding up to 8K resolution, along with an AI NPU providing approximately 20 TOPS of performance.
This development board comes with an impressive range of features, such as 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM, 128GB eMMC storage, dual Ethernet RJ45 connectors, I/O options including SATA, HDMI, USB 3 ports, and PCIe expansion slots. Notably, the HiFive Premier P550 will ship with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS pre-installed, based on the long-term supported Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series, which will continue to receive updates until December 2026.
Gordan Markus, Silicon Alliances Director at Canonical, expressed that this collaboration aims to establish the HiFive Premier P550 as a primary development platform for RISC-V, encouraging developers to engage with this ecosystem.
While Ubuntu 24.04 LTS comes pre-installed on the HiFive Premier P550 and isn’t available for separate download, Canonical offers a variety of optimized images for other RISC-V boards on their official website.
