Previously, attackers could monitor Tor circuits under specific conditions, such as taking control of an application within Tails. This control would allow them to exploit weaknesses in "Onion Circuits" and the Tor Browser wrapper, leading to potential deanonymization. Another identified issue allowed unauthorized changes to persistent storage settings. The Tails project has chosen not to elaborate on how such takeovers could be executed via apps.
The latest update not only resolves these security issues but also introduces several new features. For example, the "About Tails" dialog now includes a button for searching upgrades, and keyboard shortcuts have been added for enhanced navigation. The Tor browser integrated within Tails has been upgraded to version 14.0.5, and Thunderbird has been updated to version 128.6.0esr. Additional enhancements include running Python code entirely in isolated mode again and improved reliability for time synchronization during Tor startup.
