Serpent OS Announces Alpha Release with Framework 13 Compatibility and Flathub Support

Ikey Doherty’s Serpent OS is almost ready to launch its first alpha version, and we got an exclusive chance to explore the update’s new features and improvements since its pre-alpha stage.

Ikey Doherty shared insights about the anticipated features in the Serpent OS Alpha, including support for the Framework 13 laptop, default Flatpak installations from Flathub, enhanced compatibility with AMD Ryzen processors, and broader hardware support.

The Serpent OS Alpha will operate on the newly released Linux 6.10 kernel and will support the NVIDIA open GPU kernel modules by default for users of NVIDIA’s 560 series graphics drivers. It also includes Mesa 24.2 open-source graphics stack for AMD and Intel graphics hardware.

Significant updates were also made to the Rust-based moss package manager. Enhancements include default support for Flathub for Flatpak software installations, enabled power-profiles-daemon and switcheroo-control by default, improved signal interruption (SIGINT) management, enhanced error handling within containerized moss environments, better udisks2 support, enhanced management of partial downloads, and support for installing the COSMIC desktop environment.

In addition, moss now utilizes sudo-rs as a memory-safe audited substitute for sudo, eliminates the requirement for repeated moss sync -u commands for transient packages, and adopts OS-supplied SSL certificates via p11-kit. It also incorporates a Rust-based helper aligned with its stateless architecture.

“My belief is the tool quality labels are separate from the distro itself, and while we want tooling improvements we can’t lock the fate of the OS to it. So I’m accelerating both sides and one doesn’t determine the other,” remarked Ikey Doherty in an exclusive interview with 9to5Linux.

Ikey Doherty is diligently developing a graphical user interface (GUI) for the Serpent OS installer (lichen), aimed at simplifying the installation process for newcomers. Furthermore, the forthcoming Serpent OS Alpha release is set to deliver numerous bug fixes, enhanced tooling, recipes, and additional enhancements. Learn more about this exciting development at Serpent OS.

GNOME is set to be the default live session user interface for the Alpha release of Serpent OS. However, the development team is also preparing a separate ISO featuring the ALPHA version of the COSMIC desktop environment. Take an early look at what to expect!
