Valve unveiled Proton 9.0-3 today as the newest stable version of the open-source compatibility layer, Proton, which facilitates the running of Windows games on Linux platforms. This release comes more than three months after its predecessor.
The latest iteration, Proton 9.0-3, introduces compatibility for a host of Windows games not previously supported. These include Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (desktop version only), Ball at Work: The Ultimate Speedrun Platformer!, Banyu Lintar Angin, Dinner with an Owl, Farlight 84, Flatout 3, KinitoPET, and Owl Observatory Demo. This update follows on the heels of the enhancements made in Proton 9.0-2.
Additional titles that are now playable on Linux thanks to Proton include Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Super, Sword of Convallaria, Syberia, THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII STEAM EDITION, To Pixelia Demo, Unity of Command II, and Zaccaria Pinball.
Proton 9.0-3 also addresses regressions observed in several games like Alan Wake’s American Nightmare’s DLC, Bionic Commando, Sonic Forces, GRID Autosport, GRID 2, Noita, and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, improving their playability with this release. Linux users who experienced issues with these titles might consider revisiting them with the updated Proton version.
The new Proton release enhances support for several previously supported games, including Guild Wars 2, Fallout 3 (both standard and GOTY editions), Yakuza Kiwami, Quantum Break, and Yakuza 4 Remastered. Also seeing improvements are Zeepkist, Arcanum, Aimlabs, RAID: World War II, Strip Fighter ZERO, Undecember, IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition, Shady Brook – A Dark Mystery Text Adventure, and Starfield: Creation Kit.
Additional games benefiting from these enhancements include Halo Infinite, Squad, Three Kingdoms, FINAL FANTASY XII THE ZODIAC AGE, Helldivers 2, Dinogen Online, SCP Secret Laboratory, Burnout Paradise Remastered, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Project Kunai, One Finger Death Punch, Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, Spirit Hunter: NG, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, THE FINALS, and Once Human.
Furthermore, Proton 9.0-3 introduces support for D3D12 in OpenXR, enhances AVPro playback in VRChat, fixes compatibility with the EA Desktop and Ubisoft Connect launchers, optimizes memory usage for video playback in 32-bit games, and introduces a new warning in the Proton Log for systems with low file descriptor limits.
Proton 9.0-3 incorporates advanced components such as DXVK 2.4-40-gd0ea5a4a87c9, Wine Mon 9.2.0, vkd3d-proton 2.13-64-g47840a4bb614, and dxvk-nvapi 0.7.1-19-gbd542144518d. For further information on the updates included in this release, you can view the changelog on the project’s GitHub page.
To activate Proton 9.0-3 for your preferred games, simply right-click the game within your Steam Library, navigate to Preferences, and access the Compatibility tab on the left sidebar. From there, select version 9.0-3 from the drop-down menu for an automatic download.
