postmarketOS 24.06: A New Era with KDE Plasma 6 and GNOME Mobile 46

The postmarketOS developers have announced the release of postmarketOS 24.06, the latest stable version of this Alpine Linux-based operating system designed for mobile devices and computers. This update includes support for new devices and the latest versions of supported graphical interfaces.

Key features of postmarketOS 24.06 include support for the Google Nexus 10 tablet, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s laptop, the MS Surface RT tablet, as well as generic x86_64 support, allowing you to install postmarketOS on almost any PC or laptop. Additionally, it offers NVIDIA Tegra ARMv7 support, enabling the use of postmarketOS on various devices powered by Tegra 2/3/4 chips, such as the Asus Transformer, Google Nexus 7 (2012), LG Optimus Vu, and WEXLER Tab 7t.

Based on the Alpine Linux 3.20 release, postmarketOS 24.06 also includes updated graphical interfaces. These encompass the latest versions of KDE Plasma Mobile 6 and GNOME Shell on Mobile 46. The latter introduces a new scheduling manager that enhances UI smoothness and adds support for triggering the keyboard with a double-tap on the bottom bar.

For users preferring the GNOME-based Phosh graphical interface, postmarketOS 24.06 includes the Phosh 0.39 release. This update brings new features such as folders in the app overview, improved handling of devices with notches, the ability to select Wi-Fi networks via Quick Settings, and the option to open the on-screen keyboard by long pressing on the bottom bar.

It also ships with the Sxmo 1.16.3 graphical interface, improving suspension control and introducing new device configurations for the Nokia N900, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, and PineTab 2 devices. All four graphical UIs come with the beautiful Meadow wallpaper.

Among other noteworthy changes, postmarketOS 24.06 adds new keyboard mappings for Chromebook devices, GPU acceleration support for the Samsung Chromebook, logbookd as the default logger, support for initramfs to export logs on boot failure, non-free firmware installed by default, the ability to install the interface cage when building your own images, as well as numerous improvements and bug fixes.

Check out the release announcement page for more details about the changes included in postmarketOS 24.06, which you can download from the official website for your device. Existing users running postmarketOS 23.12 should check out the official wiki on upgrading their installations to a newer postmarketOS release.
