Pinta 3.0 has been released as a significant update to the open-source painting application, which is available for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms. The new version brings an array of features and enhancements, largely centered around a transition to GTK4 and libadwaita technologies, aiming to modernize the user interface and user experience.
One of the major changes in this release is the addition of a preference in the View menu, allowing users to switch between dark and light color schemes. The "New Screenshot" feature now integrates with platform-specific tools, such as the XDG screenshot portal on Linux and macOS’s built-in screenshot utility.
Pinta 3.0 introduces an impressive set of new effects, including Dithering, Voronoi Diagram, Vignette, Dents, Feather Object, Align Object, and Outline Object. The app now supports customizable gradients for effects like Fractal and Clouds, along with enhanced control over the Tile Reflection effect’s type and edge behavior. Additionally, improvements have been made to effects like Twist and Zoom Blur to enhance usability and control.
The canvas grid has been revamped, providing a more useful dimension than the previous pixel grid, along with support for add-ins and an export option for portable pixmap (.ppm) files. Enhancements in selection editing, brush size adjustments with keyboard shortcuts, and nearest-neighbor resampling for image resizing have also been added.
Other notable improvements include an upgraded color picker dialog, trackpad zooming capability (including pinch-to-zoom gestures), and WebP image support in the Windows version. A dedicated installer for ARM64 architecture on macOS has been introduced, and the minimum required .NET version has been updated to 8.0.
Pinta 3.0 also features a "Reseed" button for the Random Noise option, improvements to the add-in manager dialog for compatibility, and the ability to hide tool windows within the dock layout. The text tool has been updated to support better pre-editing, and the Clone Stamp tool sees improvements in functionality.
