OpenWrt 24.10 Released: Featuring Linux 6.6, Default TLS 1.3, and Support for 1970 Devices

OpenWrt 24.10 has been released, bringing significant updates to the open-source lightweight Linux operating system for routers. This version upgrades the kernel from Linux 5.15 to Linux 6.6 and includes TLS 1.3 support by default, enhancing security and compatibility. Additionally, OpenWrt 24.10 improves support for WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and introduces initial support for the upcoming WiFi 7 (802.11be).

The development of this release spanned over a year, culminating in more than 5,400 commits. The total number of supported devices has now reached 1,970, marking a substantial increase in compatibility. Notably, this version is the first stable release to support OpenWrt One, a router that was collaboratively designed by OpenWrt developers and Banana Pi.

Key Highlights of OpenWrt 24.10:

  • TLS 1.3 Support: Enabled in default images using MbedTLS 3.6.
  • File System Security: Support for POSIX Access Control Lists and file system security attributes is activated for devices with larger flash memory.
  • Multipath TCP: Kernel support for Multipath TCP has also been added for devices with significant flash memory.
  • WiFi Enhancements: Improved support for WiFi 6 and the first steps towards WiFi 7 compatibility.
  • Package Updates: Includes updated versions of critical packages such as hostapd, dnsmasq, and dropbear.

Several new targets for hardware support have been incorporated as well, including support for AllWinner D1 RISC-V SoC, Intel XScale IXP4xx SoCs, and various Loongson and STMicroelectronics SoCs.

Despite these advancements, the release comes with known issues:

  • Some devices, such as those with the Airoha AN8855 switch, lack support for LED functionality.
  • Non-functional 5GHz WiFi has been reported on various devices using ath10k chipsets.
  • Users experiencing link instability with MT7530 switches can disable Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) as a temporary fix.

Most routers currently operating on OpenWrt 23.05 can seamlessly upgrade to version 24.10 using the sysupgrade utility, preserving existing configurations. For detailed instructions, users may refer to the official release notes or utilize the firmware selector based on their specific device name.
