OBS Studio 31.0 has officially entered the public beta phase for this robust, open-source, cross-platform, and free tool used for video recording and live streaming on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
This new version, OBS Studio 31.0, introduces a variety of exciting features, such as the NVIDIA Blur Filter alongside Background Blur, preview scrollbars, support for the v210 format in AJA device capture, integration with Amazon IVS services, QSV AV1 screen content coding, and support for YouTube Chat features directly from the platform.
For Linux users, the upcoming OBS Studio release will bring several enhancements, including improved screensaver inhibition abilities when installing OBS Studio as a Flatpak application, an upgraded QSV encoder, changes to the Display and Window capture sources to avoid implicit capturing, the built-in Automatic Scene Switcher being disabled on Wayland, and the removal of support for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
Additionally, OBS Studio 31.0 is set to automatically separate the NVIDIA Audio Effects from Noise Suppression, ensuring that existing filters are migrated seamlessly, alongside an updated NVENC implementation featuring split encoding, a Target Quality VBR mode (CQVBR), custom options for various settings without needing standalone UI elements, and the inclusion of B-Frames as references.
With the upcoming major release of OBS Studio, users can anticipate a variety of significant updates. One of the notable changes includes a new warning message that will appear for the Window Capture source when users attempt to capture WinUI 3 applications using BitBlt. Furthermore, there will be enhanced error messages for macOS Virtual Camera, the removal of NVIDIA Kepler GPU support in the NVENC implementation, and a transition for scene items to rely on relative coordinates.
Beginning with OBS Studio 31.0, the code signing certificate for the software will be refreshed, which may affect how game capture interacts with certain anti-cheat systems. In addition to these changes, a multitude of bug fixes will be implemented to enhance existing features, ensuring OBS Studio runs more reliably and stably. For additional information, feel free to review the release notes.
The initial public beta of OBS Studio 31.0 is ready for download from the project’s GitHub page, providing ready-to-use binaries for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, alongside versions compatible with Windows and macOS. However, it is important to remember that this is a pre-release version, which means it should not be utilized in production settings.
