Nobara 41: The Fedora-Based Gaming Distro Embraces Open-Source NVIDIA Drivers

The Nobara Project has announced the release of Nobara 41, an updated Linux distribution based on Fedora that aims to enhance the gaming experience. This new version comes with a significant shift: it defaults to using the open-source NVIDIA graphics driver and introduces additional features aimed at improving both usability and performance.

Key features of Nobara 41 include support for the Flatpak Beta repository, enhancements for home theater PC (HTPC) setups, and various utility updates. The distribution integrates performance upgrades with the inclusion of cuda-devel to support CUDA packages, as well as the latest stable Vulkan drivers, which are crucial for gamers who play Vulkan-accelerated games. Additionally, it ships with mesa-libgallium-freeworld, which is compiled with H.264 and H.265 codecs to facilitate better screen recording.

An upgraded Nobara Driver Manager now allows for an easier installation of the Broadcom wireless driver. Meanwhile, the Nobara Package Manager has been enhanced for a smoother experience when managing Flatpak applications.

The Nobara Welcome utility now features Discord from the Flatpak Beta channel, which supports screen sharing on Wayland. Furthermore, it includes Blender from the Fedora Linux repositories, allowing users to engage in 3D graphics work with H.264 recording support via FFmpeg, alongside a revamped DaVinci Resolve wizard.

Notably, the Nobara Updater tool has received updates to support detection of installed HTPC packages, disable GRUB boot timeout for a more seamless HTPC/handheld experience, and provide an updated system tray icon capable of switching between light and dark modes.

A new addition to the suite of tools is the Nobara Tweak Tool. This tool gives users control over disk partition mounting, input controller packages, and automatic updates of specific applications such as DeckyLoader, now pre-installed.

Under the hood, Nobara 41 has received various kernel enhancements, including support for the xpadneo Bluetooth driver for Xbox controllers and the inclusion of AMD ROCm packages from the official Fedora repositories.

The distribution utilizes the Calamares installer which has been forked to offer a more streamlined graphical installation experience with offline installation options now available.

Nobara 41 is powered by the Linux kernel 6.12 LTS and features the latest KDE Plasma 6.2 desktop environment. Users can download Nobara 41 in various editions including KDE Plasma, GNOME, HTPC, and Handheld editions from the official website.
