Nitrux 3.9 Released: Immutable Distro Introduces NVIDIA 570 Graphics Driver and Exciting New Features

Uri Herrera has announced the release of Nitrux 3.9, the latest stable version of this innovative immutable and systemd-free distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux and featuring the KDE Plasma desktop environment. This update follows the monthly Nitrux release cycle and brings several enhancements and new features tailored particularly for users with NVIDIA GPUs, including the inclusion of Linux 6.12 LTS as the default kernel.

A key highlight of this release is the updated NVIDIA 570 graphics driver, currently in beta, which provides better support for NVIDIA GPU users. Additionally, the NVIDIA OpenRC services have been improved to utilize a PID file for the nvidia-powerd daemon.

Among the new features, Nitrux 3.9 introduces fingerprint authentication support in the SDDM login manager and Plasma desktop, enhancing user security. Other improvements include enhanced touchpad settings that broaden compatibility with various devices and modifications to the live user package to streamline usage by adding the user to the video group.

Nitrux 3.9 also upgrades the OpenRC service to start the BlueZ Bluetooth daemon and refine scripts to maintain their functionality. There are updates to boot parameters and initrd modules used by the Hyper-V hypervisor, alongside refinements to scripts for installing applications like Bottles and Heroic Games Launcher, ensuring compatibility with their respective SDK runtimes.

This release also brings the Nitrux SB Manager, a tool to create machine owner keys compatible with Secure Boot, and the Optimus GPU Switcher widget for seamless transitions between integrated and dedicated GPUs. Power management is improved via the power profiles-daemon, enhancing system performance based on user-defined settings.

Security enhancements are a significant focus, with new parameters for booting the kernel that introduce the Landlock security module and consolidates Linux security modules for stronger system integrity. The update mitigates spurious wake events in USB devices and enables Page Table Isolation to combat speculative execution vulnerabilities like Meltdown.

As with each release, Nitrux 3.9 includes various bug fixes and updated components. Users can access the full list of changes and download the live ISO image for fresh installations from the release announcement page. Existing users can expect to receive update notifications through the built-in package management tools in the upcoming days.
