NetworkManager 1.52 Released: New IPvlan Interface Support and Enhanced ethtool FEC Mode

NetworkManager version 1.52 has recently been released, enhancing the open-source software used for managing network connections in Linux-based operating systems. This update follows five months after the previous version, 1.50, and introduces several notable features.

Key improvements in this release include support for IPvlan interfaces and the capability to manually configure LTE’s initial EPS bearer authentication. Additionally, it now supports ethtool’s Forward Error Correction (FEC) mode and streamlines DNS server management by allowing automatic route additions through the new ipv4.routed-dns and ipv6.routed-dns properties.

Furthermore, NetworkManager 1.52 adds an ipv4.link-local=fallback property to assign an IPv4 link-local address when no other IPv4 address is configured. New properties like ipv4.shared-dhcp-range and ipv4.shared-dhcp-lease-time facilitate customization of the DHCP server’s offered range and lease duration.

The release also enables specifying DNS servers using a URI-like syntax for DNS over TLS, along with support for the “IPv6-only preferred” DHCPv4 option outlined in RFC 8925. This option indicates a host’s support for IPv6-only modes without needing an IPv4 address if IPv6 connectivity is available.

Moreover, NetworkManager 1.52 integrates the Dnsconfd plugin for managing the system-wide DNS caching resolver and records interactive history in the $XDG_CACHE_HOME/nmcli-history directory rather than the previous ~/.nmcli-history. A new “shared” method was also introduced for IPv6 configurations in the nmtui interface.

This update further enhances features related to initialization and management, like the rd.net.dns option for configuring global name servers and additional configuration keys for global DNS management. Importantly, it fixes several bugs, including those affecting the activation of bond and bridge ports, creation of MTPCP endpoints, and management of VPN routes to mitigate TunnelVision attacks.

NetworkManager 1.52 is available for download from its GitLab page. However, users are advised to wait for the new version to be included in their GNU/Linux distribution’s stable software repositories before applying updates.
