NetworkManager 1.50: New Features for Wi-Fi Channel Width Configuration in AP Mode

NetworkManager 1.50, an open-source tool for managing network connections on Linux-based systems, has been released with a range of enhancements and features.

This update arrives four months after NetworkManager 1.48 and brings several notable improvements. It now supports matching an OVS system interface by MAC address, allows for specifying a system OVS interface using the MAC address, enables multiple gateways for a single network, and includes options for configuring channel width in AP mode for Wi-Fi.

Additions include the capability to configure veth interfaces through the nmtui command line interface, a newly introduced timeout option for connectivity checks, and enhancements for reapplying VLANs on bridge ports. Moreover, it provides functionality to retry hostname resolution in case of failure and supports the use of sysctl ipv6.conf.default for ip6-privacy settings.

In this version, when retrieving the system hostname using reverse DNS lookups on addresses set up on interfaces, NetworkManager 1.50 takes into account the contents of /etc/hosts. This update also corrects a crash issue caused by malformed LLDP packets when debug logging is enabled and removes inappropriate terms from keyfiles.

Finally, NetworkManager 1.50 has deprecated the use of “dhclient”. This functionality will no longer be available unless explicitly enabled and is set to be removed in a future release. The developers suggest utilizing the internal DHCP client instead, which has been the default option since NetworkManager 1.20 or NetworkManager 1.12 when built with Meson.

You can download NetworkManager 1.50 as a source tarball here, but please note that it requires manual compilation. If that’s not something you wish to do, you might want to wait until this new version of NetworkManager appears in the stable software repositories of your preferred GNU/Linux distribution.
