NetEase has announced the reversal of the controversial 100-year bans on players of Marvel Rivals who used emulation software on macOS and other non-supported platforms. These bans were originally imposed after the game mistakenly flagged legitimate emulation attempts as cheating, leading to widespread backlash and negative publicity.
The game utilizes an anti-cheat system comparable to those in other major titles, designed to prevent cheating on its primary platform, which is Windows. However, players attempting to use programs like Parallels on macOS or Proton on Linux found themselves banned for what was interpreted as cheating.
NetEase acknowledged the issue on a Discord channel and committed to correcting these bans in a forthcoming update. This decision came after direct complaints from CodeWeavers’ CEO, James Ramey, whose company develops Crossover, a Windows emulation software aimed at helping non-Windows users play Windows games.
As NetEase works on updating the game’s security measures, players can expect to have their bans reversed upon notification. Until then, they may still receive bans when using emulation software.
