Mesa 24.2 Introduces New Shader Cache as Default in Latest Open-Source Graphics Stack Update

The Mesa 24.2 open-source graphics stack for Linux-based systems has been officially unveiled as the second major release in the Mesa 24.x series.

This version enhances the RADV (Radeon Vulkan) graphics driver by introducing support for new Vulkan extensions such as VK_KHR_dynamic_rendering_local_read, VK_EXT_legacy_vertex_attributes, VK_MESA_image_alignment_control, VK_KHR_maintenance7, and VK_EXT_shader_replicated_composites. It also adds 10-bit support for RADV.

Furthermore, Mesa 24.2 expands support for the VK_EXT_legacy_vertex_attributes Vulkan extension to the ANV (Intel Vulkan), Lavapipe, and Turnip drivers. The VK_EXT_shader_replicated_composites Vulkan extension also sees expanded support on a range of drivers including ANV (Intel Vulkan), Dozen, HasVK, Lavapipe, NVK, and Turnip.

Additional enhancements include support for VK_KHR_maintenance5 and VK_EXT_depth_clamp_zero_one Vulkan extensions for the V3DV driver and the GL_ARB_depth_clamp OpenGL extension for the V3D driver. A new default shader cache implementation is introduced, aimed at reducing file system overhead.

As expected with a new major Mesa version, this release improves support for several video games, including Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Worms: Revolution, Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Fallout 3, Starfield, Far Cry, Cyberpunk 2077, Total War: Warhammer III, God of War, Borderlands, and Enshrouded.

Last but not least, Mesa 24.2 enhances support for recent Blender versions with RDNA3 cards and the Nouveau driver, boosts functionality for GNOME Shell on Wayland, enhances compatibility for the AMD Radeon RX 7600, AMD Radeon RX 6400, and AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPUs, and addresses several bugs.

Check out the full release notes for more information on the updates included in Mesa 24.2. This update is soon coming to the stable software repositories of your preferred GNU/Linux distribution. It is advisable to upgrade your Linux system to this release promptly, especially if you are a gamer.
