Canonical has officially named the upcoming Ubuntu release, Ubuntu 25.04, as the “Plucky Puffin,” with a confirmed launch date set for April 17, 2025.
This marks Canonical’s 42nd iteration of Ubuntu, and it will serve as an interim version, receiving software and security updates for nine months, until January 2026. This release caters to those Ubuntu enthusiasts eager for the latest technologies, albeit at the expense of some stability found in the Long Term Support (LTS) versions.
Paride Legovini from the Ubuntu Release Team shared today that the development cycle for Plucky Puffin is officially underway, although the toolchain was uploaded earlier this month on October 17. The release schedule is now available for those looking to keep track of important dates.
Per the release timeline, public beta testing for Ubuntu 25.04 is slated to commence on March 27, 2025, with the final version expected to be released on April 17, 2025. Other notable dates in the Plucky Puffin schedule include two optional Ubuntu Testing Weeks on December 19, 2024, and February 27, 2025.
The Feature Freeze phase is scheduled for February 20th, 2025, while the Kernel Freeze and Final Freeze phases are expected on April 3rd and April 10th respectively. Additionally, it’s important to highlight that Plucky Puffin will be compiled with -O3 for AMD64 architectures.
Ubuntu 25.04 is projected to come equipped with the forthcoming GNOME 48 desktop environment, anticipated to launch on March 19th, 2025. It is also likely to be accompanied by the Linux 6.14 kernel series, expected to debut in late March 2025, aligning perfectly with the Plucky Puffin release.
Furthermore, Ubuntu 25.04 will feature Python 3.13 and LLVM 20 as default, alongside GNU Binutils 2.44, and various other cutting-edge GNU/Linux technologies that will be unveiled in due course.
