Mark Your Calendars: GNOME 48 Desktop Environment Set to Launch on March 19th, 2025

As many of us are currently exploring the numerous new features and enhancements of the GNOME 47 “Denver” desktop environment series, the GNOME project has begun preparations for the forthcoming significant release, GNOME 48, which is scheduled to arrive on March 19th, 2025.

GNOME 48 will be named “Bengaluru” in honor of the city hosting the GNOME Asia Summit 2024, set to occur in Bengaluru, Karnataka, from December 6th to December 8th, 2024. The GNOME developers have already shared a release timeline.

According to this timeline, GNOME 48 alpha will be accessible for public testing on January 4th, 2025, with the beta version expected on February 1st. Following this, the Release Candidate (RC) milestone should be ready by March 1st, 2025. The official launch of the GNOME 48 desktop environment is targeted for March 19th, 2025.

Here’s a quick overview of the GNOME 48 release schedule to help you plan:

  • GNOME 48 Alpha – January 4th, 2025
  • GNOME 48 Beta – February 1st, 2025
  • API/ABI/Feature/UI/String Announcement Freeze – February 1st, 2025
  • String Freeze – February 22nd, 2025
  • GNOME 48 Release Candidate – March 1st, 2025
  • GNOME 48 Final Release – March 19th, 2025

While it’s premature to discuss the new features and significant changes headed for the GNOME 48 desktop environment, I am particularly interested in the innovative window management system taking a unique approach with mosaic tiling behavior in this release.

Additionally, GNOME 48 will feature a greatly enhanced Loupe image viewer, which promises exciting new functionalities, including improved zoom controls. These controls will allow users to set a precise zoom percentage, revert to the original “best fit” zoom level, and have access to shortcuts for frequently used zoom levels.

Additionally, Lopue is introducing a new experimental feature that allows users to drag images directly into the main window, alongside a loader for RAW image formats. There will also be fundamental image editing tools, such as cropping, as stated by Sophie Herold. Rest assured, I will keep you informed about all significant developments in GNOME 48 throughout its six-month-long development period.

In the meantime, the GNOME development team intends to roll out additional updates for the current GNOME 47 desktop environment series, with the next one being GNOME 47.2, expected to be released by the end of November or early December 2024. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure that your GNOME installations are always up to date.
