LXQt 2.1 Update: Introducing Experimental Wayland Session and Enhanced Styling Features

The developers of the lightweight LXQt desktop environment have showcased some of the major changes coming to the LXQt 2.1 release later this year, including the long-awaited Wayland session.

The biggest change in LXQt 2.1 will be the experimental Wayland session through the implementation of the lxqt-wayland-session package. Several popular Wayland compositors will be supported by the Wayland session, including Hyprland, KWin, Labwc, Niri, River, Sway, and Wayfire.

However, since it’s tagged as “experimental”, the new Wayland session won’t support some standard LXQt features, including global shortcuts and monitor settings. The same goes for applications that are limited to X11 only, such as Redshift and some clipboard managers.

“Currently there are 3 dedicated panel backends, xcb (X11), general wlroots, and kwin_wayland – with kwin_wayland supporting several features like moving windows to workspaces, workspace switcher, urgency hints, and showing the desktop. Other backends can be created and added in the future, enabling similar features for other compositors,” said the devs in a blog post.

In addition to the experimental Wayland session, the upcoming LXQt 2.1 release will also bring some styling improvements, such as the ability to automatically apply corresponding palette colors overall when the theme is changed, configure the icon size of the toolbars, and support styling of tooltips colors by palettes on the desktop and in other places.

LXQt 2.1 will also improve the text and icons for “Split terminal” menu items in QTerminal, implement searching for executable names in Fancy Menu, support for activating “Do not disturb” from the notification tray icon, as well as the ability to remember previous window sizes in monitor settings.

Of course, there will be many other changes across the board, especially bug fixes for a more reliable and stable LXQt desktop experience. The final LXQt 2.1 release is expected sometime in mid-November 2024 if everything goes according to plan.
