Linux Mint Introduces Night Light Feature for Cinnamon and Expands Support for Framework Laptops

The latest newsletter from the Linux Mint team has been published today, announcing their development of a Night Light feature for the Cinnamon desktop along with native support for Framework laptops.

Linux Mint 22.1 is currently being developed and is expected to be released this December. This upcoming version will feature the brand new Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment, which will include a new theme and a Night Light feature designed to help alleviate eyestrain during evening use of the computer.

This new Night Light function will take the place of the Redshift implementation found in earlier Linux Mint versions and will be incorporated directly into the system settings. It will also be compatible with both Wayland and X11 sessions, as the Linux Mint team is moving toward making Wayland the default in future releases.

In addition to the revamped default Cinnamon theme in Linux Mint 22.1, the team is set to introduce a “Force Quit” dialog, which has been rewritten in Clutter, to assist users when applications become unresponsive. Other enhancements include updated media buttons, improved Workspace OSDs, a new status applet, and various upgrades to notifications, animations, and the main menu.

Additionally, the Linux Mint team has announced a collaboration with Framework to ensure that future Linux Mint versions will operate seamlessly on their customizable laptops. Currently, both groups are concentrating on the flagship Cinnamon version of Linux Mint specifically for the Framework Laptop 13.

“Achieving full compatibility with Linux Mint and the Cinnamon desktop is a priority for them. This is incredibly significant for us as it allows us to endorse this brand within our community without concerns about compatibility challenges,” stated Clement Lefebvre, the project leader of Linux Mint.

As the Christmas season approaches, Linux Mint 22.1 is set to introduce a significantly enhanced package management system. Similar to the Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” release, the forthcoming version will be powered by Linux kernel 6.8 and will be based on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat).
