Linux Mint 22 Beta Unveiled: Featuring Cinnamon 6.2 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Foundation

The Linux Mint team has released the beta version of the upcoming Linux Mint 22 operating system series, which can be downloaded and tested right now.

Linux Mint 22 is codenamed “Wilma” and it’s planned for release in late July 2024. The beta version is here to give us an early glimpse at the new features and improvements baked by the Linux Mint team into their popular Ubuntu-based distribution.

The flagship edition featuring the Cinnamon desktop environment features the latest Cinnamon 6.2 desktop environment while the MATE and Xfce editions are shipping with the MATE 1.26 and Xfce 4.18 desktops. Cinnamon’s Wayland session is still in an experimental state.

Some highlights of the upcoming Linux Mint 22 release include support for Ubuntu HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernels, better language support, PipeWire as the default sound server, support for the new Debian DEB822 format, GTK4 support for themes, and improved HiDPI support during boot.

In addition, Linux Mint 22 will come with the Mozilla Thunderbird email client as a native DEB package, a new GNOME Online Accounts GTK independent XApp to continue supporting the Online Accounts functionality, and it will disable unverified Flatpak apps by default in Software Manager.

On top of that, Linux Mint 22 will come with a new preinstalled Web App called Matrix, which connects you to the Matrix chat network, a new thumbnailer for GIMP (.xcf) files, as well as various improvements to the in-house Xed, Sticky, Timeshift, and Pix apps.

Under the hood, Linux Mint 22 is based on Canonical’s latest LTS (Long Term Support) Ubuntu release, namely Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), and it’s powered by the Linux 6.8 kernel series. This means that Linux Mint 22 will also be a long-term support release which will be supported until 2029.

Without further ado, you can download the beta version of Linux Mint 22 right now from the official release announcement made by the Linux Mint team this morning. However, please keep in mind that this is a pre-release version so don’t install and use it in a production machine.
