Linus Torvalds Unveils First Release Candidate for Linux Kernel 6.15

Linus Torvalds has announced the availability of the first Release Candidate (RC) for the forthcoming Linux 6.15 kernel series, marking a significant milestone in its development. This announcement comes just two weeks after the release of Linux kernel 6.14. The merge window for 6.15 has now closed, and from this point forward, test versions will be available for public testing every Sunday, leading up to the final release expected in late May or early June 2025.

Among the notable features in Linux kernel 6.15 are Rust support for hrtimer, a new boot parameter setcpuid= for x86 CPUs, enhanced support for counting and reporting internal events with sched_ext, as well as various improvements for both Intel and AMD PMUs. Additionally, the kernel introduces nested virtualization support for VGICv3 on ARM and emulation support for FEAT_PMUv3 on Apple Silicon.

The release will also see updates to the ACPI fan driver to manage fans with fine-grained state checking, and the ACPI button driver will receive added functionality to subscribe to system event notifications, which are vital for waking systems from sleep modes. The kernel features updates and new drivers to improve hardware support alongside various documentation updates, file system, and networking enhancements.

Torvalds mentioned that while this was one of the more substantial merge windows, it wasn’t record-breaking. He highlighted that a significant portion of the updates pertained to driver modifications, with two-thirds of the patches being driver updates. The remaining changes encompassed various architecture updates and core kernel improvements, making for a diverse array of enhancements.

Developers and users interested in testing the kernel can download the first Release Candidate from Torvalds’ Git tree or the kernel.org website. However, it is advised not to use this pre-release version on production machines, given its developmental stage.

The final release of the Linux kernel 6.15 is projected for either May 25 if only seven Release Candidates are announced, or June 1 if an eighth is included.
