The development team behind the KDE neon rolling release distribution announced the launch of KDE neon 6.2, which is now based on the latest Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) operating system series.
KDE neon utilizes a long-term supported Ubuntu release while incorporating the latest KDE software and Plasma desktop environment. With a rolling release model, users are not required to download new ISO images or perform system reinstalls.
Every two years, however, the KDE neon developers rebase their distribution on the most recent Ubuntu LTS series. This week, they have successfully rebased KDE neon on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), bringing along the latest security updates and software improvements while also featuring a newer kernel to enhance hardware support.
“We have just switched on the upgrade for KDE neon to rebase on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS,” stated the developers. “We do this every two years and the 22.04 LTS base was becoming increasingly outdated, with old Pipewire causing issues and packages like Krita failing to compile.”
Users of KDE neon can expect to receive a pop-up notification on their display within the coming days, prompting them to upgrade to KDE neon 6.2, which is built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. However, prior to proceeding with the upgrade, it’s crucial to back up your essential files to avoid any data loss.
If you don’t receive a notification, or if you wish to speed up the upgrade process, you have the option to manually upgrade your KDE neon systems by following the Noble Upgrade instructions from the KDE neon team.
Additionally, a new ISO version of KDE neon 6.2 is available for those interested in installing the Ubuntu-based operating system on new machines or reinstalling existing setups. Moreover, the latest ISO image comes pre-loaded with the newly launched KDE Plasma 6.2 desktop environment.
