The IPFire Project has announced the release of IPFire 2.29 Core Update 190, enhancing its open-source GNU/Linux distribution primarily used as a firewall or router. This update introduces support for post-quantum cryptography for SSH key exchanges, utilizing methods such as Streamlined NTRU Prime and X25519 with SHA-512. Notably, support for RSA keys has been removed in new installations; however, existing systems will retain RSA keys to avoid disrupting monitoring tools.
Michael Tremer remarked on this decision, explaining that while RSA is still considered strong, the adoption of Elliptic Curve Cryptography offers stronger security against potential future attacks.
Additionally, the update lays groundwork for Wi-Fi 7 support by enabling features such as Neighbourhood Scan and optimizing the configuration process for wireless access points. The user interface for the IPFire web application has been refined to simplify configurations and improve debugging.
The new release also updates the RED interface to remove the requirement for the RFC4039 Rapid Commit option, allows users to configure IPsec traffic scanning, and enhances firewall rules through the SYN Flood Protection feature. Other improvements include fixing bugs in the Unbound/DHCP-Leases bridge and enhancing OpenVPN connection settings.
