Introducing GNOME 47 “Denver”: Discover the Latest Features and Enhancements

The GNOME Project announced the release of GNOME 47, the newest version of this widely appreciated desktop environment for Linux-based systems, featuring several enhancements and new capabilities.

Key features of GNOME 47 (codenamed Denver) include the addition of nine accent colors in the Style section of the Appearance panel within Settings, incorporation of the File Chooser portal which allows for larger thumbnail previews when accessing files via preferred applications, and the adoption of the XDG dialog protocol on Wayland to provide specifications on surface attributes such as dialog modality.

Furthermore, GNOME 47 supports the DRM lease protocol, reintroduces support for traditional X11 cursor themes, and includes support for multi-finger touchpad gestures, persistent remote login sessions, hardware-based encoding for screen recording, tablet tool keybindings and actions, and sensitivity ranges for tablet tools.

This release also debuts an experimental color management protocol in the Mutter window and composite manager, initial PipeWire explicit sync support, implementation of positioning and focus mechanisms for always-on-top windows, adoption of the notification portal that utilizes the GTK protocol, and the capability for compiling GNOME Shell with Mutter that omits X11 support, paving the way for a Wayland-centric future.

Numerous enhancements are present as well, including improved notifications on the lock screen and the ability to center the time on the lock screen when using a 12h format, improved monitor matching when restoring your windows on monitor hotplug, improved workspace previews in Window List and Workspace Indicator Shell extensions, and improved detection of non-seekable files in the Evince document viewer.

Nautilus (Files) received a file chooser “choices” menu, the ability to drop items into the file chooser, support for the background menu in the file chooser, the ability to vertically scroll the pathbar, a new Network view, the ability to list physical internal disks in the sidebar by default, a revamped places sidebar, performance improvements to the file search functionality, and support for extracting bzip2 tar archives.

The Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser has been enhanced with a variety of new functionalities and improvements. These updates include a new preference for toggling navigation gestures, settings for adjusting brightness and contrast in dark reader mode, a “Not Now” choice in the save password popover, a delete option in the text box context menu, and a “Clear” button in the address bar. Additionally, it now supports autofill.

Further enhancements include a new bookmarks search bar, a Privacy Report feature, and a new shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Delete for the Clear Website Data dialog. There’s also functionality for importing passwords from CSV files, settings to use an image as wallpaper in Flatpak installations, a confirmation dialog for WebExtension installations, and various other user interface improvements. GNOME Calendar now supports importing ICS files through drag and drop, alongside enhanced file importer dialogs and improved spacing in the Month view. Additionally, GNOME Console has seen an expansion in its preferences dialog to include options for scrollback size, and screen reader support has been restored.

GNOME Software has introduced a new plugin that simplifies the installation of DKMS and akmods keys when Secure Boot is activated, thereby restoring the capability to install the NVIDIA graphics driver with Secure Boot on. The GNOME System Monitor has been updated with a more contemporary interface for dialogs and the Disks view, along with improved initial loadgraph points.

The GNOME Text Editor has enhanced its printing features and spellchecking abilities, along with various recoloring adjustments to better align with the platform’s styling. The Orca screen reader now boasts improved support for Wayland and multiple other enhancements. GNOME Sudoku introduces a new window for keyboard shortcuts and now supports zooming with the mouse wheel. GNOME Remote Desktop adds the functionality to enter new credentials via standard input when using grdctl.

GNOME Maps now features playground icons and supports dark mode when depicting public transit routes on the map, including Transitous support for routing. The Loupe image viewer has improved in detecting non-transparent images and in applying best-fit scaling upon image rotation when a new image is opened. Lastly, GNOME Initial Setup has refreshed its Password page, offering a field where users can set an optional password hint.

GNOME Control Center, also known as Settings, has been upgraded with a newly designed “Add User” dialog, enhanced password rules based on /etc/security/pwquality.conf, compatibility for the new gnome-remote-desktop server configuration DBUs interface, functions for establishing Wacom stylus keyboard shortcuts and monitor switching, and the addition of an MS365 online account option in the Online Accounts section.

Additional significant improvements in GNOME 47 include better drag and drop capabilities between X11 and Wayland clients, enhanced support for computers with multiple types of graphics processors (AMD/NVIDIA or Intel/NVIDIA), capabilities to recover from secondary GPU upgrade faults, more dependable notifications during overview startup, improved smartcard login support, and refined logic for managing placement and focus in windows designated as always-on-top.

Moreover, GNOME 47 debuts features that support the playing of Virtual Reality (VR) games on Wayland desktop sessions, enhances fractional display scaling to better accommodate legacy X11 applications, and establishes a foundation for reliable and hardware-accelerated screen sharing necessary for NVIDIA’s proprietary graphics driver.

This release includes numerous other minor adjustments as well. For additional information, explore the release notes. GNOME 47 is slated to soon be included in the stable software repositories of various major distributions and will be the standard desktop environment for forthcoming significant releases such as Fedora Linux 41 Workstation and Ubuntu 24.10.
