In an attempt to provide generative AI capabilities across various ecosystems, prominent entities such as the Linux Foundation and Intel, in addition to other similar companies and groups, have collaborated to establish the Open Platform for Enterprise AI.
This platform, referred to as OPEA, functions as a sandbox project contained within the LF AI & Data Foundation, which is under the Linux Foundation umbrella. The primary objective is to promote the adoption of open generative AI systems and construct scalable, adaptable GenAI frameworks that leverage the most exceptional open-source innovations across the ecosystem. This information can be found in a press release discussing OPEA.
The subsequent companies and groups have agreed to participate in this initiative:
With any luck, the initiative will yield enhanced interoperability among products and services provided by the aforementioned vendors.
“As GenAI matures, its integration into existing IT infrastructure becomes both natural and necessary,” commented Kaj Arnö, the CEO of MariaDB Foundation, in a press release by OPEA.
There’s a focus on finding innovative uses for AI, especially moving up the technology stack, by employing an open and cooperative governance model. To this end, a framework was created by OPEA, consisting of composable building blocks for generative AI systems. These range from training to data storage and suggestions. The organization also developed an assessment system to evaluate generative AI systems based on their performance, features, trustworthiness and readiness for enterprise-grade deployment. Additionally, blueprints have been produced for RAG component stack structure and workflows.
Intel is expected to provide the following:
“Fostering a foundation based on open-source and standards, from datasets, formats, APIs to models, enables organizations and enterprises to build in a transparent manner,” stated A.B. Periasamy, CEO and co-founder of MinIO, in another press release issued by OMEA. “These principles of openness must also be the backbone for AI data infrastructure.”
Retrieval-augmented generation, where generative AI models refer to real-world company or public data before providing an answer, has shown value in enterprise usage of generative AI. RAG assists companies in gaining confidence that generative AI will not produce plausible but nonsense answers. OPEA believes RAG capability can enable generative AI to extract more value from the data repositories that companies already possess.
OPEA is excited to join LF AI & Data, promising to provide open-source, standardized, modular, and heterogenous Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines for enterprises, with a keen focus on open model development and optimized support for various compilers and toolchains,” stated LF AI & Data Executive Director, Ibrahim Haddad in a press statement.
There are no universally accepted standards for deploying RAG at the moment, as Intel noted in its announcement post, OPEA seeks to address this issue .
SEE: We named RAG one of the top AI trends of 2024.
“We are seeing tremendous enthusiasm among our customer base for RAG,” said Chris Wolf, global head of AI and advanced services at Broadcom, in a press release from OPEA.
“The constructs behind RAG can be universally applied to a variety of use cases, making a community-driven approach that drives consistency and interoperability for RAG applications an important step forward in helping all organizations to safely embrace the many benefits that AI has to offer,” Wolf added.
Organizations can get involved by contributing on GitHub or contacting OPEA.
