HandBrake 1.9.1 has been released as a maintenance update for the popular open-source video transcoder. This version builds upon HandBrake 1.9.0, improving AV1 video decoding and subtitle support thanks to updates in the libraries it uses.
The new release integrates libdav1d 1.5.1, enhancing AV1 decoding capabilities. Additionally, it incorporates HarfBuzz 10.2.0, which improves support for subtitles, specifically SRT files with overlapping subtitles. Other technical enhancements include addressing issues related to AC3 and EAC3 extradata in MKV files.
Further improvements aim to optimize the transcoding experience, such as fixing the pixel format selection for FFV1 when using hardware decoding. Users will also benefit from several bug fixes aimed at improving overall performance on Windows systems. These fixes address various issues, including the failure of the autoname function and problems with the title bar progress during multi-instance encodes.
The initial release of the HandBrake 1.9 series occurred on December 1, 2024, introducing significant features, including support for Intel QSV VVC hardware decoding, lossless VP9 encoding, and the addition of a new ALAC audio encoder.
