HandBrake 1.8.2 Update: Introduces FFmpeg 7.0.2 Support and Squashes Known Bugs

HandBrake 1.8.2 has been released today for this powerful and popular open-source, cross-platform, and free video transcoder/converter for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows systems.

HandBrake 1.8.2 is the second maintenance update to the latest HandBrake 1.8 stable series fixing various bugs like an issue where an encoded file could be outputted with the wrong filename when using the queue on Linux systems.

For all supported platforms, this release also fixes a potential crash that occurred when trying to scan deleted files, an issue that could cause some audio tracks to be dropped, and scanning of broken video clips that use reserved color matrix values.

Only for Windows systems, HandBrake 1.8.2 fixes an issue where the auto name wasn’t triggering correctly with preset changes, a potential crash when importing presets from the macOS version, an issue when loading presets where a video encode isn’t available on the system, and a minor startup performance issue on some Intel-based systems.

HandBrake 1.8.2 introduces support for the newly launched FFmpeg 7.0.2, enhancing video decoding and filter functionalities. It also incorporates libvpx 1.14.1 to handle VP8 and VP9 video encoding, and upgrades to libass 0.17.3 for improved subtitle support.

This release follows HandBrake 1.8.1 by approximately one and a half months. The previous version resolved several issues including a misconfiguration with x265 encoder when using repeat headers, NVEnc encoder ignoring the specified level, corruption in DVD subtitles during rendering, and video artifacts when employing the eedi2 filter.

Additionally, HandBrake 1.8.1 addressed a stall in the encoding queue on macOS that could occur if the encoding process crashed during job configuration. For Windows, various fixes were implemented like disabling erroneous hardware decoding for previews, an overly aggressive auto name feature, and disabling hardware decoding for new installations.

Review the release notes on the project’s GitHub page for further information. HandBrake 1.8.2 is also available to download as a Flatpak app from the same source, allowing installation on any GNU/Linux distribution that supports the Flatpak runtime.
