Grml 2024.12: The Debian-Based Linux Distro Now Supports 64-Bit ARM CPUs

Grml, a Debian-based live bootable Linux distribution tailored for system administrators and users of text tools, has released its latest version, 2024.12. This update enhances hardware compatibility and incorporates several updated components.

Rooted in the software repositories of the upcoming Debian 13 “Trixie” (also known as Debian Testing), and powered by the Linux kernel 6.11, Grml 2024.12 (codenamed “Adventgrenze”) introduces support for 64-bit ARM AArch64 (ARM64) architectures, along with UEFI 32-bit boot capabilities to accommodate 64-bit PCs with 32-bit firmware. A significant change is the introduction of a new naming schema for Grml flavors, moving away from previous versions like grml32 and grml96.

The developers explained that the new naming convention follows the format grml-$FLAVOUR-$VERSION-$ARCH. For instance, "grml-full-2024.12-amd64" indicates the grml-full flavor for version 2024.12.

This release also features a new theme for the GRUB bootloader in UEFI mode, added support for UK English in the grml-lang package, integration with the paste.debian.net service in grml-paste, enhanced hardware information via grml-hwinfo, and improved Zsh configuration through grml-zshrc.

The updated grml-live build system has been improved to better support usage inside containers, and it now includes architecture-specific boot add-on templates and a new build driver designed for CI integration in the release pipeline, alongside other enhancements.

As of December 19, 2024, Grml 2024.12 was synced with the Debian Trixie/Testing repositories. The release addresses various bugs, adds new packages, and removes some obsolete ones. For more details, users can check the release notes.

Grml 2024.12 is available for download from the official website for x86_64 (amd64) and AArch64 (arm64) architectures. It’s important to note that Grml now excludes support for 32-bit x86 PCs. The default graphical environment utilizes the lightweight Fluxbox window manager.

Additionally, Grml recently marked 20 years of operation and invites users to commemorate this milestone by sending postcards, which will contribute to a "Grml wall." For the mailing address, details can be found in the blog.
