Today, following a delay of one week, the GNOME Project officially released the Release Candidate (RC) version of the forthcoming GNOME 47 desktop environment series for public testing.
This Release Candidate of GNOME 47 arrives two weeks subsequent to the beta version and brings forth an experimental color management protocol in the Mutter window and composite manager. It also initiates initial PipeWire explicit sync support and integrates a new backlight API into gnome-settings-daemon.
Additionally, the GNOME 47 RC enhances cursor movement smoothness when the system is under load, resolves issues with drag and drop operations between X11 and Wayland clients, and corrects problems arising from grabbing pop-ups during drag and drop. It also repairs EGLDevice support, advances support for certain hybrid devices experiencing cursor freezing, and rectifies touch window dragging with pointer lock activated.
Moreover, this release has the capability to store display layout modes in the monitor configuration, tackles a problem with tablet input on maximized windows, enables scaling-aware Xwayland clients to adjust their scale autonomously, enhances smartcard login functionalities, and modifies drag-to-dash to function as a move operation.
The latest version of Nautilus, the Release Candidate for version 47, introduces several exciting updates to the File Chooser. Among the new features are a “choices” menu for easier file management, the capability to drag and drop items directly into the File Chooser, and options for interacting with the background menu. Other highlights include the introduction of vertical scrolling in the pathbar and added support for decompressing bzip2 tar files.
Epiphany 47, also known as GNOME Web, in its Release Candidate stage, brings enhancements to Web App installation and CSV password import. It now provides a more detailed privacy report showing the number of trackers, allows for the export of passwords to CSV, and enhances the usability of its bookmarks sidebar and dialogue. Additionally, it resolves an issue that caused a crash when closing a dialog related to multiple open tabs.
The GNOME Calendar’s 47 RC update features a new implementation that sets a specific user agent when interfacing with remote servers to fetch calendar files. It also enhances URL validation for adding new calendars, shows indicator icons for holidays in the importer dialog, ensures only writable calendars are available when scheduling new events, and transitions to use the AdwSpinner for various loading indicators.
GNOME Control Center 47 RC (Settings) enhances the loading speed of wallpapers in the Appearance panel, corrects a crash due to invalid application permissions in the Apps panel, corrects the visibility of the “Auto Timezone” setting when Location Services are not available in the Date and Time panel, updates the description for the MS365 online account provider in the Online Accounts panel, rectifies the addition of “Shared Media” folders in the Sharing panel, introduces a confirmation dialog for removing user fingerprints in the Users panel, and resolves a crash issue when detaching removable WiFi adapters in the Wi-Fi panel.
Further enhancements include GNOME Shell 47 RC utilizing rst2man for generating man pages, GNOME Sudoku 47 RC introducing mouse wheel zoom functionality, setting a new default window size of 650×700, and adopting consistent terms for Puzzle and Game. GNOME Remote Desktop 47 RC has also optimized to reduce resource consumption during unauthenticated sessions.
Additionally, GNOME Maps 47 RC now incorporates Transitous support for public transit navigation and features updated highway shields from OSM Americana. GNOME Calculator 47 RC has been updated with brand colors, and GNOME Text Editor 47 RC now utilizes libspelling for spellchecking and enables implicit-trailing-newline by default.
As expected, many bug fixes and updated translations are included in this Release Candidate, so check out the changelog on the release announcement page for more details. Meanwhile, you can take the RC version for a test drive by downloading the GNOME OS 47 RC ISO image, which you can install on a virtual machine with UEFI support, such as the GNOME Boxes version from Flathub.
“Note this installer image includes an experimental version of the work to integrate systemd-sysupdate in GNOME OS. This was a collaboration between the GNOME Foundation and Codethink through the Sovereign Tech Fund (STF),” said the GNOME Project.
