The GNOME Project recently announced the release of GNOME 47.3, marking the third maintenance update for the popular GNOME 47 desktop environment series. This update includes significant improvements, bug fixes, and additional features following the previous version, GNOME 47.2.
Notable changes in GNOME 47.3 include enhanced input-to-output latency for cursor movements, support for wp_viewport for cursor surfaces, improvements in Xwayland support, and a better frame rate for external monitors connected to secondary GPUs in copy mode. Developers reported that users can achieve up to 144 FPS on a 144 Hz monitor directly connected to NVIDIA discrete GPUs, though some users noted that visual smoothness may vary. Fullscreen gaming performance at 144 FPS, however, has shown significant improvements.
Additional updates address various issues within the GNOME Software application, improving firmware update downloads, enhancing thumbnail loading speeds in Nautilus (the file manager), and refining the Orca screen reader’s handling of specific MathML elements. The print preview functionality in the Loupe image viewer also received fixes for SVG image displays.
Nautilus specifically benefits from various fixes that enhance user experience. Issues addressed include proper folder openings during drag-and-drop operations, improved touchscreen scrolling, and memory leaks.
Changes in the GNOME Control Center include fixes to the color calibration tool, addressing incorrect GPU names, and making user avatars more accessible for screen readers. Moreover, several components, such as GNOME Shell and GNOME Remote Desktop, received various bug fixes.
For those utilizing the older GNOME 46 series, GNOME 46.8 has also been released, incorporating some of the enhancements noted in GNOME 47.3.
