The GNOME Project today announced the release of GNOME 46.5, marking the fifth maintenance release of the GNOME 46 “Kathmandu” desktop environment series. This update continues to resolve bugs and enhance performance.
Arriving five weeks following the release of GNOME 46.4, version 46.5 introduces refinements such as smartcard login capabilities, controlled user permissions on new Wi-Fi connections for restricted profiles, the display of pending PAM messages at login, and the functional consistency of the “Locate Pointer” feature with the “Reduce Animation” setting active.
Additionally, this update remedies multiple issues found in the Mutter window and composite manager. It corrects functionalities like drag and drop interactions between X11 and Wayland clients, drag and drop from active pop-ups, EGLDevice support, and the appearance of a frozen cursor on certain hybrid machines. Problems regarding tablet input on maximized windows, cursor freezing post-suspend, modifiers on multi-GPU systems, tablet device disconnections, and window dragging with pointer lock are also addressed.
The GNOME Software application itself moves to version 46.5, focusing on minimizing energy consumption once the main window is closed. The inclusion of gnome-autoar 0.4.5 supports the handling of bzip2 tarballs, now showing proper support within Nautilus, enhancing user experience with archived files.
The Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser has recently been upgraded to version 46.4. This update rolls back changes made to key event handling due to issues with non-Latin keyboards, eliminates the tab overview shortcut in Web Apps, addresses errors in the icon URL during the Install Web Application process, and resolves crashes in tab overview mode when no tabs are open.
In related updates, GNOME’s GVfs, a userspace virtual filesystem, has advanced to version 1.54.3. This version brings enhancements to OneDrive support, including the management of multiple drives sharing identical IDs, local detection of MIME types when not specified by the server, and improved naming capabilities for the root of the drive.
Furthermore, the release of GNOME 46.5 includes libadwaita version 1.5.4, which introduces support for updated GPL-2/3.0-only SPDX IDs. It also corrects issues such as the back button menu detecting phantom pages, prevents two types of crashes associated with drag and drop, and fixes scroll undershoot issues in dropdown menus and the emoji picker.
Last but not least, GNOME Online Accounts received a quick fix for auto-detection of Yahoo accounts along with enhancements to the gnome-desktop components, which now boast improved compatibility with muslc. Added are updated default Indic input methods, and support for ibus-chewing as the default input source for Traditional Chinese (zh_TW) localization.
This release also includes updated versions of the GNOME Disk Utility (Disks), version 46.1, and GNOME Remote Desktop, version 46.5, which primarily feature updated translations. Additional updates cover core components like GLib 2.80.5, GTK 4.14.5, libgweather 4.4.4, and librsvg 2.58.4.
Check out the release announcement page for all the details about the changes implemented in GNOME 46.5, a version that may already be available in the stable software repositories of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution. If you’re using GNOME 46, updating your installations as soon as possible is recommended.
