The GNOME Project recently announced the Release Candidate (RC) of the upcoming GNOME 48 desktop environment series, which is expected to officially launch on March 19th, 2025. This RC brings several enhancements over the previous Beta and Alpha versions, particularly focusing on improving performance and usability.
One of the key features in GNOME 48 RC is the support for dynamic triple buffering, aimed at significantly enhancing the desktop experience, especially on lower-end GPUs like Intel integrated graphics and for Raspberry Pi computers. Additionally, the Mutter window and compositing manager now supports the Wayland color management protocol, along with a feature to activate the Activities Overview by pressing the Super key. Centering of new windows by default is also implemented.
The updated Nautilus file manager reintroduces features that were absent in earlier pre-releases, such as the ability to remove bookmarks from the path bar and improvements in the performance of directory loading. It also receives various bug fixes that enhance functionality.
Furthermore, GNOME Control Center now includes a Global Shortcuts Provider in the Apps panel, an HDR luminance settings interface in the Display panel, support for new DBus APIs in the Power panel, and feedback synchronization for fingerprint enrollment in the Users panel.
GNOME Shell improves notification handling by grouping them by applications. It also reorganizes default app layouts on the dash/grid/folder for better accessibility. Additional enhancements involve fixes that address various usability issues, including handling suspend/resume during screen time tracking.
Other applications like Evince and GNOME Maps also received substantial updates, improving user experience while using these tools. The full changelog for GNOME 48 RC can be viewed on the GNOME announcement page, and users are encouraged to test this version by downloading the GNOME OS 48 ISO image.
