Explore the Future: Fedora Linux 41 Public Beta Rolls Out with Linux Kernel 6.11 and GNOME 47

The Fedora Project has unveiled the beta release of the upcoming Fedora Linux 41, inviting the public to test and explore its new features while identifying potential bugs.

Equipped with the cutting-edge Linux 6.11 kernel, this beta iteration presents the soon-to-be official GNOME 47 desktop environment in the primary Fedora Workstation edition, exclusively using Wayland and reinstating support for installing NVIDIA drivers with Secure Boot. Additionally, the latest KDE Plasma 6.1 desktop environment is exhibited on the Fedora KDE Spin.

Significant enhancements include the transition to DNF5 for improved package management, augmented service security through systemd service hardening, speed enhancement in GnuTLS with Kernel TLS (KTLS), inclusion of ROCm 6.2 for AMD users, and the introduction of bootupd in Fedora Atomic Desktops and Fedora IoT.

Additions extend to a new CLI tool named fedora-repoquery for querying repositories of Fedora Linux, EPEL, eln, and CentOS Stream, enhanced support for self-encrypting drives in the Fedora Installer, support for Intel IPU6 cameras, default composefs in Fedora CoreOS and Fedora IoT editions, and a decoupling of /usr/bin/dtrace from systemtap-sdt-devel (systemtap) into its own package to better optimize numerous build environments.

As expected, Fedora Linux 41 beta comes equipped with a modern selection of default software that features the recently launched LibreOffice 24.8 office suite and Mozilla Firefox 130 web browser. Additional updates include a contemporary GNU toolchain with GCC 14, GNU Binutils 2.42, GNU C Library 2.40, and GDB 14, alongside further advancements such as RPM 4.20, Python 3.13, Go 1.23, LLVM 19, Perl 5.40, and Node.js 22.

The forthcoming edition also aims to boost the image-mode Fedora user experience by including familiar DNF commands for both client-side and within container image builds, integrating DNF5 with rpm-ostree, setting “tuned” as the default power profile management daemon in Fedora Workstation, KDE Plasma, and Budgie editions, and enabling reproducible package builds.

Lastly, Fedora Linux 41 introduces a new Fedora Spin centered around the emerging Miracle-WM tiling window manager that utilizes the Mir compositor library, dubbed Fedora Miracle. This spin is designed to enhance the Wayland experience across various platforms, including lower-end ARM and x86 devices.

Fedora 41 Miracle Spin

The final release of Fedora Linux 41 is expected sometime in late October or early November 2024. Until then, you can download the beta version from the official website, but keep in mind that it may contain unresolved bugs or unfinished features so do not install it on a production system. More details are available on the release announcement page.
