Linux Mint’s development team has announced plans for a redesigned application launcher for the Cinnamon desktop environment, as detailed by Clement Lefebvre in the February 2025 monthly newsletter. This upcoming change comes alongside the release of Linux Mint 22.2, which will use the HWE (Hardware Enablement) Linux kernel 6.11 from the upstream Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS.
The revamped application menu aims to enhance user experience, and although the exact release date isn’t specified, it is expected to coincide with the upcoming Cinnamon 6.6 release. The sneak peek reveals significant changes, including an expanded side panel that displays the full names of pinned icons alongside standard home folders.
Additionally, user interface adjustments have been made: the screen lock, logout, and shutdown buttons have been relocated from the side panel to the bottom of the app browser, while the side panel will also showcase the user’s name and avatar. These updates promise to streamline the interaction with the desktop interface, making it visually appealing and user-friendly.
It’s worth noting that the refreshed Cinnamon application menu will not be limited to Linux Mint; it will also be available for users of other distributions that adopt the latest version of the Cinnamon desktop environment.
