The GNOME Project has released GNOME 46.7, which serves as the seventh maintenance update for the GNOME 46 “Kathmandu” desktop environment series. This update addresses various bugs and includes updated translations.
Key improvements in GNOME 46.7 include enhanced accessibility for the keyboard backlight toggle in Quick Settings, ensuring that systems default to GPUs with built-in panels connected as the primary GPU, and changing the Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) thread’s default priority from real-time to high.
The update also tackles a number of graphical issues: it guarantees frame events for cursor surfaces, allows BGRX8888 format on Big Endian systems, rectifies graphical artifacts seen in partially-rounded buttons in GNOME Shell, and resolves cursor glitches during the use of virtual monitors as well as issues related to immediate cursor updates post window drag.
Moreover, GNOME Initial Setup has been improved with version 46.7, which now features an enhanced timezone page that removes duplicate entries for certain cities and includes support for GTK 4.17 to prevent startup crashes.
GNOME Online Accounts has been updated to version 3.50.7, fixing a deadlock problem with canceled tasks, while libsoup is at version 3.4.5, addressing several issues regarding NULL dereference, overflow, and assertions. Additionally, gnome-user-docs 46.7 brings updated translations.
For full details, along with the complete changelog, you can visit the announcement page. It is advisable for users still on GNOME 46 to update to version 46.7 as soon as it is available in their distribution’s repositories.
However, users are highly encouraged to upgrade to the newer GNOME 47 series, particularly version 47.2, which was released recently. The GNOME 46 series will continue receiving maintenance updates until March 2025, when it reaches end of life (EOL) and is succeeded by GNOME 48, slated for release on March 19, 2025.
