The Asahi Linux project has encountered significant challenges in extending its support to M4 Macs due to changes in Apple Silicon. Initially aimed at allowing Linux to run natively on Apple devices, the project has made strides in encompassing M1 and M2 chips. However, complications arise with the M4 models.
Developer Sven Peter shared on Mastodon that incorporating M4 support is proving to be “rather painful.” While the focus currently remains on enhancing support for M1 and M2, work is underway to tackle the M4’s distinct requirements. Unfortunately, users attempting to implement the m1n1 bootloader on M4 Macs have faced difficulties, primarily due to alterations made by Apple in this generation of chips.
Peter elaborated on the technical difficulties, explaining that the process for configuring a boot object involves setting the environment for Apple’s Secure Page Table Monitor (SPTM) with specific register configurations, which unfortunately does not facilitate Linux operations effectively.
While the project has identified a potential workaround by hijacking XNU exception handlers and pagetable code, this is not a straightforward solution. As of now, there is uncertainty regarding the timeline for when M4 support will be realized.
