Calibre 7.20 Launches with Enhanced PDF Input Engine and New Tolino Shine 5 Firmware Support

The latest version of Calibre, 7.20, has been officially released by developer Kovid Goyal. This update enhances the open-source, free, and cross-platform ebook management application available for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

One of the standout features in Calibre 7.20 is the introduction of a new default dedicated PDF Input engine. This engine includes automatic detection and removal of headers and footers through document analysis. Users still have access to the legacy PDF Input engine, and they can easily switch between the new and old versions within the PDF Input section of the Conversion dialog.

This update also enhances the Kobo driver, ensuring compatibility with the latest firmware utilized by the Tolino Shine 5 ebook reader. Additionally, the Trim image tool has received updates, now allowing users to adjust the aspect ratio of images with a new control. Furthermore, the Read Aloud feature has been improved, permitting users to set an extra pause at the end of each sentence when utilizing the Piper TTS engine.

Moreover, the PDF Output engine has been revised in Calibre 7.20, now featuring support for the _WIDTH_PIXELS_ and _HEIGHT_PIXELS_ variables, which indicate the dimensions of the header/footer area in templates.

A number of bugs have been fixed in the latest Calibre update, enhancing the performance of the content server. Notable fixes include resolving a problem that prevented books with non-ASCII filenames from being downloaded via the Kindle browser in /mobile view, as well as an error caused by embedding server HTML within a third-party iframe.

Calibre 7.20 also addresses a regression from the prior version that hindered the copying of books to another library when the book’s author did not exist in the target database. Additionally, an issue with Read Aloud’s Piper backend was corrected, enabling it to function properly on Windows systems with non-ASCII characters in the voice names.

This release introduces new news sources, including the NYT Magazine and RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland. Updates have also been made to existing news sources like National Geographic, Science Journal, The Wire, Nikkei Asia Magazine, Swarajya, Mainichi, Nautilus, Times Literary Supplement, Saechsische Zeitung, India Today, and Scientific American.

Explore the changelog for detailed information on the enhancements and bug resolutions introduced in Calibre 7.20. You can obtain it from the official website as a ready-to-use binary that operates on almost any GNU/Linux distribution without the need for installation.
