CachyOS August 2024 Update: Introducing Support for COSMIC Desktop Environment

The latest ISO release for August 2024 of the Arch Linux-based CachyOS is now available, introducing enhancements, support for groundbreaking technologies, and the latest updates.

This ISO update brings support for the System76’s COSMIC Alpha desktop environment, which is written in Rust, and can be added to your system with the sudo pacman -S cosmic-session command from a terminal once CachyOS is installed.

For users with NVIDIA graphics, the updated CachyOS now includes the NVIDIA 560 Beta graphics driver by default, which uses open GPU kernel modules. In line with this, the CachyOS developers have enhanced the hardware detection system to automatically engage the open GPU kernel modules for compatible NVIDIA GPUs.

The release also features improvements in the CachyOS Hardware Detection tool, particularly refining the detection of NVIDIA PRIME/Hybrid Profiles to better identify mobile GPUs, while removing the RTD3 workaround that was problematic for certain setups.

The CachyOS Kernel Manager tool has seen enhancements in the CachyOS August 2024 release, including the introduction of custom flags for the sched-ext configuration through the GUI for each scheduler, support for NVIDIA open GPU kernel modules for custom kernels, and a feature to remember the last selected options for custom kernels. Additionally, improvements have been made to password prompt handling and the capability to build a custom pkgname with LTO and NVIDIA modules enabled has been added.

Furthermore, the CachyOS August 2024 release enhances Secure Boot management with a new script, sets up an Arch Linux mirror and Cache CDN (CDN77) as the default during the installation process, enables automatic mounting of user partitions from the Live ISO, and includes support for the ROG Ally X gaming handheld in the CachyOS Handheld Edition.

Internally, the CachyOS August 2024 release is powered by the Linux kernel 6.10.5 and includes the latest KDE Plasma 6.1.4 desktop environment as the default setting. The new ISO release also consists of up-to-date core components and applications.

Explore the release announcement for further information and to download the CachyOS August 2024 release available in Desktop or Handheld editions. If you’re an existing CachyOS user, simply update your system by executing the sudo pacman -Syu command in your preferred Terminal application.
