Budgie 10.10 is set to launch in Q1 2025 as a Wayland-only desktop environment, eliminating support for X11 sessions. This decision comes as the Budgie development team, led by Joshua Strobl, continues their efforts to enhance Wayland support following the success of previous releases like Budgie 10.9 and 10.9.2.
In 2024, the Budgie developers made significant progress in adapting the desktop environment for Wayland, which is now described as "daily-drivable" for average users. Users can already log into a Budgie Desktop Wayland session with the Labwc compositor, utilize task grouping for applications, and access various functionalities such as the Budgie Menu and screen sharing via tools like OBS Studio.
Despite their efforts, the release of Budgie 10.10 has been postponed due to unforeseen software development challenges. Strobl expressed that some areas were more complex than anticipated, necessitating additional work.
Future plans involve Budgie 10.10 serving as the final major update in the Budgie 10 series, after which the focus will shift towards developing Budgie 11. Upcoming features for Budgie 10.10 include enhancements to existing applets and the introduction of the Display Configuration Batch system.
As Budgie transitions fully to Wayland, developers are also creating their own Wayland compositor, although the default will remain Labwc for Budgie 10.10. They assure users that details regarding Budgie 11 will be shared as development progresses.
