Audacity 3.6.2 Update: Introducing Legacy Effects Section and Numerous Bug Fixes

Audacity 3.6.2 has been announced as the most recent stable update of this free, open-source, and multiplatform digital audio editor and recording software, resolving various issues found in the Audacity 3.6 versions.

This represents the second minor update of the 3.6 iteration, where Audacity 3.6.2 introduces a new section of “Legacy” effects featuring the classical Limiter, Compressor, and Classic Filters, modifies the time track range into a single dialog, and returns to the original behavior for selection shifts upon importing audio clips.

Primarily aimed at bug corrections, the update smooths out various defects such as the loss of the pitch indicator on Linux systems for values reaching double figures, a missing baseline, system freezes post-undo actions, altered envelope visuals for clips not starting at 0, and the distortion of the track header interface when adjusting channel sizes in a stereo track.

Additionally, corrections were made for issues where pasting actions would reset a clip’s name, cutting operations failed to transfer clips to the clipboard, cases where Audacity’s interface would turn white on certain configurations, problems in LV2 plugin detection on macOS and Windows platforms, and complications with converting stereo tracks to mono.

On top of that, Audacity 3.6.2 fixes Labeled Audio operations, an issue where Cloud projects sometimes won’t open, a bug causing tracks with master effects sometimes only export silence, a crash after recording long sessions, a crash when failing to load a cloud project, and importing of multi-channel OGG and Wavpack files.

Last but not least, this release addresses an issue where the “editing clips can move other clips” preference would desynchronize multiple tracks and a bug causing Audacity maxing out the CPU when minimized. Check out the release notes on the project’s GitHub page for more details on these changes.

Audacity 3.6.2 is available for download from the official website as a universal AppImage binary that lets you run the application on virtually any GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. Of course, you can also install Audacity from Flathub as a Flatpak app or from your distro’s software repositories.
