Ardour 8.11 has been released, addressing a significant workflow-blocking bug affecting Linux users of this open-source digital audio workstation (DAW). This update comes three and a half months after the last version, Ardour 8.10, and is seen as a crucial hotfix.
The primary issue tackled in this release arises when users conduct operations that require Ardour to create a modified copy of existing audio data, such as time-stretching or pitch-shifting, while using musical time as the default time domain. Ardour developer Paul Davis emphasized that if such operations are executed, users might find that they cannot reopen their sessions in the future.
Additionally, Ardour 8.11 resolves a crashing bug that affected users of meters not based on quarter notes (like 6/8 or 5/8). Crashes occurred when users attempted to add BBT markers in these unique meter sessions.
It was originally planned that Ardour 8.10 would be the final release in the 8.x series, as the development team shifts focus to the upcoming major release of Ardour 9.0, which promises new features yet to be disclosed. Consequently, developers are urging all users of 8.10 and Linux distribution maintainers to upgrade to 8.11 promptly.
