Google has introduced a tabbed interface in the Linux Terminal app with the latest release of Android 16 Beta 3. This application allows Android users to run Linux apps in a virtual machine, specifically a full instance of Debian, enabling access to various Linux programs not natively available on Android devices.
With the addition of tabs, users can easily multitask by executing commands in multiple tabs without needing to wait for each process to finish. Currently, users can open several tabs—up to twelve—though they cannot be rearranged or renamed at this time. This feature is expected to enhance productivity for those utilizing the Terminal app.
Another notable introduction in this beta version is a "Display" button meant for running graphical Linux applications. However, this functionality is currently inactive as graphical app support isn’t enabled yet in the beta release.
Google has been actively working on improving the Linux Terminal app since the demo of Doom running on it was shared previously. Future enhancements may include speaker and microphone support, which, combined with hardware-accelerated graphics, would expand the range of usable Linux applications significantly.
To access the Linux Terminal app, users are required to enable Developer Options on their Android device, navigate through the settings to activate the Linux environment, and download a Debian image necessary for operation.
