The PineTab-V has recently begun shipping with updated hardware and software, distinguishing itself through its use of a RISC-V processor rather than the more common ARM or x86 architecture. This 10.1-inch tablet features a 1280 x 800 pixel IPS LCD, 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 128GB of eMMC storage, complete with a detachable backlit keyboard.
Originally offered to developers and early adopters in 2023, Pine64 is now unveiling an enhanced version of the tablet, although it retains the same name. Key upgrades include the integration of an accelerometer, an LED status indicator, and identifiable specifications embedded in the EEPROM. Additionally, a previous issue of slow charging while powered off has been addressed.
The PineTab-V now ships with a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution, developed by StarFive, the manufacturer of the tablet’s processor, the StarFive JH7110. This chip comprises four 1.5 GHz SiFive U74 RISC-V CPU cores and Imagination BXE-4-32 graphics, which, while not as rapid as current ARM processors, is intended for development and experimentation rather than performance-heavy applications like mainstream tablets.
The device has a robust metal and plastic frame, measuring 242 x 161 x 9 mm and weighing 520 grams (or 990 grams together with the keyboard). Its features include a microSDXC slot accommodating cards up to 2TB, a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, stereo speakers, and various USB types (USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Type-C) alongside a 3.5mm audio jack.
The battery capacity is 6000 mAh with support for 15W (5V/3A) charging, and it offers connectivity through WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. For those interested, the Community Edition of the PineTab-V is currently available for $225 through the Pine64 Store.
