After a week’s delay, Canonical has officially released Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, marking the second point release for the long-term supported Ubuntu 24.04 LTS operating system series, also known as Noble Numbat. Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS comes with the Linux kernel 6.11 and incorporates the Mesa 24.2 graphics stacks sourced from the latest Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) release. This is a significant upgrade considering that both Ubuntu 24.04 and Ubuntu 24.04.1 had Linux kernel 6.8, making the newer kernel essential for supporting the latest hardware.
The primary focus of this point release is to provide a collection of security patches and software updates that have been introduced since the last LTS release in August 2024. It serves as an up-to-date installation medium for new computers, allowing users to install the system without needing to download numerous packages post-installation. However, users of existing Ubuntu 24.04 and 24.04.1 LTS versions should simply update their current installations rather than reinstalling.
Users can download Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS across various flavors—such as Desktop and Server editions, including popular variations like Kubuntu and Xubuntu—via the official Ubuntu website. It is important to note that this release is intended specifically for new installations.
Looking ahead, Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS is anticipated for late August 2025, promising enhancements that will feature even more modern Linux kernels and updated Mesa stacks derived from the upcoming Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) release, scheduled for April 17, 2025.
