Shotcut 25.01 has been officially released as the latest stable version of this open-source video editing software, which is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. This new version comes more than two months after the previous release, Shotcut 24.11.
One of the standout features of Shotcut 25.01 is the introduction of native Wayland support within the Flatpak bundle specifically for Linux users. This means that if you are using a GNU/Linux distribution with a Wayland session, it’s advisable to install Shotcut as a Flatpak application from Flathub. Additionally, the release includes fixes for drag-and-drop functionality from the Source player on Wayland, as well as improvements to the color picker under Wayland. Shotcut also deprecated the File > Open Other > JACK Audio option for Linux to eliminate the runtime dependency on libjack.so
.
The new version offers several impressive enhancements such as the introduction of Bins and media type and text search features within the Playlist. Users will also find a new View > Files panel, a “Show in Files” option in Properties and Jobs, and a Gradient Map video filter among the updates. Moreover, a Type parameter has been added for the Fade In Audio and Fade Out Audio filters.
Shotcut 25.01 further improves the user experience by allowing users to toggle the Settings > Player > Pause After Seek option, which defaults to on, restoring old behavior. New video filters, including HSL Primaries and HSL Range, have also been introduced, enhancing the software’s capability for video editing. Additional improvements comprise support for MLT XML clip and sub-projects and export hardware encoding functionality for Windows on ARM CPUs with h264_mf
and hevc_mf
codecs.
The playlist functionality has been refined, allowing for more practical generation of slideshows using trimmed video clips. There have also been quality improvements in the H.264 High Profile export preset, with adjustments aimed at achieving higher quality than the standard YouTube settings. The release also enhances support for various formats for 10-bit pass-through during the export process.
As with any software update, many bugs have been resolved in this version. Users interested in the comprehensive details of the changes can check the release notes on the official website, where the universal AppImage binary for downloading is available, allowing installation on virtually any GNU/Linux distribution without extra setup.
