Linux Mint 22.1 “Xia”: Embracing Dark Mode for Energy Efficiency

The recently released Linux Mint 22.1 "Xia" introduces several significant updates. This version is built on Ubuntu 24.04, incorporating the Linux kernel 6.8. One of the most noticeable improvements is in the Cinnamon desktop environment, now updated to version 6.4.

The refresh includes a sleek design with rounded window corners and darker color themes that align with contemporary UI/UX standards. It introduces features like the "Night Light" mode, which adjusts the display to warmer colors during evening hours, promoting better sleep and comfort.

Energy-saving Modes

Linux Mint 22.1 presents three distinct power modes across all editions. The energy-saving mode minimizes system resource use to conserve energy. The balanced mode attempts to strike a suitable compromise between performance and energy efficiency. Meanwhile, the performance mode is applicable for certain Intel and AMD systems, allowing them to maximize processor performance using the respective P-State driver.

Users of the Xfce and Mate desktop environments experience a minor drawback. Switching between power modes can only be achieved via command line tools like powerprofilesctl, unlike the easier applet feature available under Cinnamon.

Changes to Package Management

The Linux Mint team has revamped two critical components of package management. Aptkit replaces the outdated aptdaemon, which was reliant on D-Bus communication and no longer maintained. Captain is now responsible for installing individual DEB packages, replacing both GDebi and apturl. This transition simplifies development, bolsters the reliability of package management, and enhances compatibility with Wayland, among other improvements.

Additional Notes

Users running Linux Mint 22.1 in virtual machines, particularly on VirtualBox, should examine the release notes as they provide insights into potential issues and solutions. For those with HiDPI screens, guidelines are included to adjust the Grub2 boot menu’s display size.
