Valve’s Vision for SteamOS: Insights from the Latest Interview on Intel and Nvidia Compatibility

Valve is gearing up for an exciting year in 2025 for gamers preferring SteamOS over Windows on handheld devices. The Lenovo Legion Go S, powered by SteamOS, is set to launch in May, and Valve announced an upcoming installable beta version of the Linux-based OS for other handhelds. However, questions about installing SteamOS on desktop PCs, particularly those with Intel and Nvidia components, still loom large.

Currently, SteamOS operates effectively on the Steam Deck, which is equipped with a custom AMD processor. In the future, it will also function on the Ryzen Z2 Go in the Legion Go S. Yet, Valve’s communications concerning SteamOS expansion to non-AMD systems have been somewhat unclear.

Collaboration with Intel
In a recent interview, Pierre-Loup Griffais from Valve highlighted the company’s efforts to enhance SteamOS support for Intel systems. Although current support is considered basic, Intel is making progress. This collaboration suggests future potential for SteamOS on laptops and handhelds with Intel processors, particularly with advancements in Intel’s integrated graphics.

Nvidia Challenges
The greater hurdle lies with Nvidia. Unlike AMD and Intel, Nvidia’s proprietary GeForce graphics drivers are not integrated into the Linux kernel, which complicates the installation of SteamOS on Nvidia hardware. While Nvidia is transitioning towards more open-source integrations, Griffais acknowledged that substantial work remains to be done. Valve has committed four developers to work exclusively on Nvidia’s open-source driver, underscoring their dedication to expanding SteamOS compatibility beyond AMD devices.

Overall, while there is no set timeline for when SteamOS will be operable on Intel and Nvidia systems, Valve’s proactive measures signal a positive direction for the Linux gaming ecosystem, potentially benefitting the broader open-source community.
