The openSUSE Project recently announced that its rolling release distro, openSUSE Tumbleweed, now includes Wayland support for the LXQt desktop environment. This support stems from the release of LXQt 2.1, which introduces an experimental Wayland session through a new component named lxqt-wayland-session
. Users can utilize this session with several Wayland compositors such as Labwc, KWin, Wayfire, Hyprland, Sway, River, and Niri.
Unlike many other distributions, openSUSE Tumbleweed is among the few that provide LXQt with Wayland support, albeit with an experimental designation. However, openSUSE does not offer a dedicated live ISO image with the LXQt desktop. Users looking to try it must install it from the repositories on top of their existing environment or opt for a fresh install.
For a fresh installation, selecting the Generic Desktop option is necessary, followed by choosing LXQt in the software section of the installation summary. Regardless of the method, users must manually install the lxqt-wayland-session
package using the following command:
sudo zypper install lxqt-wayland-session
While the openSUSE LXQt team has not nominated a “default” Wayland compositor, they recommend KWin for optimal support. For hardcore LXQt users, Labwc is suggested, while Hyprland, Niri, River, or Sway can cater to those preferring a tiling setup. Wayfire is also an option for enthusiasts who enjoy numerous desktop effects.
After installing the lxqt-wayland-session
package, users will need to install a Wayland compositor. For experimentation, Labwc works well, and it can be installed via:
sudo zypper install labwc
Once installed, after logging out, users will see an option for LXQt (Wayland) in the display manager’s session drop-down box. However, it’s essential to remember that not all components of LXQt are fully compatible with Wayland yet, as this feature is still experimental.
