Linus Torvalds has announced the release of the first Release Candidate (RC) for the upcoming Linux 6.13 kernel series, which is now available for public testing. This announcement comes two weeks after the opening of the merge window for Linux 6.13, coinciding with the release of Linux kernel 6.12.
The initial Release Candidate can be downloaded directly from Linus Torvalds’ git repository or through the official kernel.org website. Notable features of the Linux 6.13 kernel include enhanced support for running Linux in protected virtual machines, improvements to AMD Epyc processors, and various updates across several file systems, including the F2FS and Btrfs file systems.
Additionally, the release introduces real-time computing capabilities for the LoongArch architecture, pointer masking support, and support for new hardware models such as the Vexia EDU ATLA 10 and the Surface Pro 9 5G tablets. The Linux kernel 6.13 also optimizes threading models and performance enhancements for networking and graphical drivers.
The final version of Linux kernel 6.13 is anticipated to be released in late January 2025, subject to the number of Release Candidate milestones announced by Torvalds in the meantime. If all goes as planned, the final release could potentially be scheduled for January 19th or January 26th, depending on the progression of the testing phases.
