Linux Kernel 6.12 Official Release: Key Features and Enhancements Unveiled

Linus Torvalds has officially announced the release of Linux kernel 6.12, showcasing a range of new features and enhancements. One of the most notable additions is real-time "PREEMPT_RT" support, which aims to improve latency and responsiveness in systems. Additionally, the kernel introduces a new scheduling algorithm called sched_ext and innovatively generates DRM panic messages using QR codes.

This latest version also brings Clang support, including Link Time Optimization (LTO) for nolibc, and updates the cpuidle tool, which now provides a clearer view of idle states. Notably, there is enhanced support for NVIDIA’s virtual command queue implementation for SMMUv3, alongside SWIG bindings for libcpupower, which simplifies scripting for developers.

Other significant features include support for translating normalized error addresses from AMD memory controllers into system physical addresses via the platform runtime mechanism (PRM), and the enhanced loading of microcode patches for newer AMD CPUs. The kernel has also improved file-backed mount support for the EROFS filesystem and guest PMU support for LoongArch KVM.

Networking capabilities receive a boost with features like Device Memory TCP, offering zero-copy TCP payload receiving, and IPv6 enhancements. Moreover, the kernel expands USB audio driver functionality and introduces various updates for the EXT4, Btrfs, exFAT, and other filesystems.

Linux kernel 6.12 also enhances driver support, including new drivers for various hardware platforms such as Marvell, Mediatek, and Realtek. The intel_idle driver now provides native support for Granite Rapids Xeon processors, and various improvements have been applied across the board to optimize performance and device compatibility.

For those eager to explore the latest developments, Linux kernel 6.12 can be downloaded from Linus Torvalds’ git tree or from the kernel.org website, although users are advised to wait for it to appear in their distribution’s stable repositories before performing an upgrade.

For more details, check out Torvalds’ shortlog on the announcement page or download the kernel directly from the git tree.
